IN LOVING MEMORY OF RUTH HAZEL SCURGGS KING
JUNE 17, 1944 - AUGUST 27, 2016
Ruth Hazel Scruggs King was born June 17,1944. Ruth was destined to succeed coming from a town in Northern Alabama named Town Creek. Ruth was one of 15 children and grew up on a farm. As you can imagine, she did her share of working in the field with the rest of the family as they worked on their own land to produce and harvest food. When of age she moved to Birmingham, AL to attend college. While there, she met her husband who was in the US Army. Ruth put down her studies to move about the country with her husband and grow their loving family of three kids. As her husband neared retirement, Ruth went back to school, to finish the pursuit of becoming a registered nurse (RN) and she did. Ruth had a love and desire to take care of people, which is what made her a great nurse, mother, wife, friend, and the best grandmother. Ruth passed August 27, 2016 but her strong desire to help anyone she could, however she could, especially in pursuing education lives on.
Today’s youth are being encouraged to pursue higher education now more than ever, but the financial obstacles that stand in their way often go unacknowledged.
With a single year of college often costing tens of thousands of dollars, completing an undergraduate degree isn’t feasible for everyone. There are many motivated, bright students who excel in academics and need assistance in order to further their education and enter their desired career industry.
This scholarship aims to support students who are pursuing higher education by reducing the financial burden of tuition. Any high school senior who is a student-athlete with at least a 3.0 GPA and non-profit volunteering experience may apply for this scholarship.
